“Twilight Out of Focus” commonly known as “Tasogare Out Focus” is Japanese Boys’ Love (BL) anime that is set in high schools and focuses on friendship, actions, and intrigues in a romantic relationship. Based on the thematic paradigm proposed, the focus is made on the two protagonists of the story – Mafuyu Sagara and Hikaru Kagiwara – who become connected under rather ambiguous circumstances and whose feelings develop gradually.

Mafuyu Sagara is a high school student and a photographing enthusiast, who looks extremely mysterious, as he is rather introverted. He is shy and unlike his friends would rather stay in the background taking pictures rather than being in front of the camera. He is a rather reserved boy and appears to be quite shy, which can isolate him from other children of his age. On the other hand, the antagonist in Hikaru Kagiwara is quite the opposite. Nevertheless, the two boys contrary in temperaments they found one thing in common and that is both of them loves art per se with Hikaru as an actor, and Mafuyu a photographer.

The settings of the plot are initiated when Hikaru is chosen to play the role of the protagonist for the school drama and Mafuyu is given a task as a photographer of the event. They get commissioned together and they start working together, their customer relations at first are rather stiff but they develop a better friendship. While Hikaru has a generally friendly demeanor, he is able to bring Mafuyu out of his bipolar shell; the same way Mafuyu makes Hikaru focused in spite of his generally rambunctious attitude.

And it slowly becomes not just friendship through Hikaru spends more time with Mafuyu and Hikaru begins to develop a romantic interest in Mafuyu. Though, these feelings are not without turmoil because as a Shinto priest, Hikaru’s sexuality, and the society’s chastity perception are major concerns. Mafuyu, who has never thought about the question of a romantic relationship with another boy, wrenches if not disturbed, but rather, interested in the attention of Hikaru. Their relationship forms a central focus in the show through which it depicts the fluctuating moods and hormonal changes of teenage life.

It is between the two boys because, one day, Mafuyu eavesdrops on Hikaru confessing that he has a crush on him. It leads to the complexity of Mafuyu’s emotions in response to the possibility of a romantic relationship, and addressing his best friend. The anime is very subtle in terms of presenting the protagonists’ coming out, growing as individuals, and overcoming their fears.

‘Twilight out of Focus’ is a very tender and philosophical Eclipse which reflects the subject of Love and Identity crisis of the teenagers. The anime complimented the representation of teenage life showing the protagonists’ attempt to comprehend their feelings and the value of true friendship. With Mafuyu and Hikaru, the series puts effort in stressing on the importance of friendship as well as the strength that people need to follow their heart regardless of the type of love.
